'Battlefield 2042' Devs Refuse To Aknowledge If We Can Pet The Robo Dog

What the dog doing?

Battlefield 2042 was announced to vigorous fanfare from both developers EA and DICE, and franchise fans who have been crying out for a sufficient new entry into the series for what feels like an eternity.

The upcoming game will serve as the sixth mainline entry (mark that it's not called Battlefield 6, as many expected) and it takes the series back to its foundations. Set slightly in the future, in the year 2042, the game world is on the brink of collapse, with nations as we know them in a state of flux. The US and Russia are at war, and refugees called non-pats, are caught up in the middle.

The game is aiming to be bigger than ever before, with huge maps, natural disasters and an arsenal of weapons and vehicles at players' disposal. Check out the game's reveal trailer right here to see what I mean:

We were privy to a behind-closed-doors screening of the game's reveal trailer and the subsequent gameplay trailer that has got everybody talking. Seeing the new weapons, vehicles and abilities had all of us feverish with delight, and we were able to engage in a short Q&A with the dev team at DICE afterward, in which they answered questions about the game's story, the fact that it's single player only, and the lack of a Battle Royale mode. They did, however, refuse to answer one much-repeated question: Can you pet the robot dog?

For those unfamiliar, the game will feature a Boston Dynamics robot dog (called Ranger) equipped with a machine gun, featured running through the middle of an intense battleground in the above trailer. But why did they refuse to acknowledge whether or not we can pet the dog? Surely, it's a simple yes or no response?

My guess is that you probably can't pet robo-doggy at the minute, but with the sheer amount of people asking about it, and the fact the question was so deftly avoided, I think they will add that in as something for fans to enjoy. Battlefield 2042 will release October 22nd on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC.
