Outlast developer Red Barrels has finally given us out first real look at the next adventure/ordeal set in the survival horror universe. As announced way back in December 2019, the new installment isn't Outlast 3. What we're instead getting is The Outlast Trials; a Cold War-era horror experience with a focus on four-player co-op.
The teaser, which you can see below, reveals that The Outlast Trials takes place in a Cold War mind control facility. It's unclear exactly how the game will play out, but it seems that we'll be taking control of the subjects of various mind control experiments, working together to overcome obstacles and escape all manner of gruesome threats.
"Whilst not a direct sequel to the other critically acclaimed Outlast titles in the series, The Outlast Trials will be set in the same thrilling universe: more precisely, right in the middle of the Cold War era," Red Barrels explained in a press release.

"The Outlast Trials will allow players to face the horrors of the trials by themselves or cooperate with up to three other test subjects. After all, it's always better to sh*t your pants with some friends!"
"We are proud to reveal the title and the first image of the game to our great community and fans," said David Chateauneuf, Red Barrels co-founder, back when the game was announced all those months ago. "Our team is hard at work creating a new experience that will bring fear and anxiety to millions of players, whether they go through the experiments alone or with friends."
It's still not entirely clear exactly when The Outlast Trials will launch, or if it'll be a current or next-gen release. Red Barrels did say back in December that it had already been developing the game for months, so hopefully it's a lot farther along at this stage. The studio also promises to focus on "content creation, variety... and gore," which is very promising.

I'm pretty interested to see how The Outlast Trials works, and will certainly be keeping an eye on it going forward. The first two Outlast games were fantastic survival horror experiences, but they were also intrinsically single-player affairs. Will having three mates join in dilute the fear factor, or could the illusion of safety in numbers help to increase the tension? I can only hope we don't have too long to wait to find out for sure.
