Crytek, the developer of the first-person shooter series Crysis and Crysis Remastered, has its nose to the grindstone on a new project, and it's shaping up to be intriguing.

It is well-known for its work on Crysis, but with titles like Warface, Ryse: Son of Rome, and Hunt: Showdown in its portfolio, the studio has shown that it wants to dance to the beat of its own drum. Particularly in the case of Hunt: Showdown, a bounty hunting battle royale set in nineteenth century Louisiana, Crytek delivered an atmospheric and innovative twist on a genre that could be considered worn out. Mixing detective work with tactical creativity to discover the mythical monster's location and survive long enough against the creature and other glory-hungry players to be extracted from the hellhole, Hunt: Showdown proves that Crytek isn't a one-trick pony.

As a result, I'm rather curious regarding its untitled and unannounced project, spied on the career page on its official website. It's important to mention that though the legacy of Crysis is invaluable to Crytek's current standing in the industry, the Remastered version didn't exactly live up to the hype. In September 2020, it launched to lukewarm reviews, with a feeling like it was anchored in the past, and on occasion, it wouldn't run at all on the Xbox One X. Not a good look. In that vein, the models and textures were also derided for their quality, reiterating that Crysis Remastered was exactly how we remembered it, but for the wrong reason. Perhaps, with a clean slate and a long development schedule, the studio will be exempt from expectation and able to go back to the drawing board, to conjure up something as creative and as thrilling as Hunt: Showdown.

As aforementioned, we found out about the new title through a listing for a job. They're looking for a game designer to assist the team on an "unannounced AAA project in our Frankfurt, Germany based studio." The candidate will additionally require a "deep passion for gaming, preferably FPS sandbox games," and judging from the rest of the description, the title is in the early stages of its development. The game designer will be focusing on "concepts" at the moment, rather than bringing the concrete elements of the game into reality. Admittedly, there's not a lot to infer from these tidbits, but, allow me to offer an angle.

Far Cry /
Crytek

Something you might not know is that Crytek are the creators of Far Cry. It developed and released the first game in the series, with a little help from Ubisoft on the publishing side of things. The subsequent partnership with Electronic Arts to create a brand new gaming series (which would become Crysis) then led to the full rights to Far Cry and the first CryEngine being handed over to Ubisoft in 2006. As a result, Far Cry could have charted a very different course if it stayed with its original studio.

Is Crytek experimenting with its ideas for Far Cry, the ones that had been shelved and shoved into filing cabinets until an opportunity not unlike this one arose? We can't say for sure, but it is an interesting proposition. Watch this space for more.
