‘Cyberpunk 2077’ Devs Confirm The Game Will Have Witcher-Style Free DLC

More bang, no extra bucks

One of The Witcher 3's many neat aspects was its free DLC. Everyone buying the 2015-released RPG, from new that is, received a selection of downloadable extras for no additional cost, including a few short quests, new armour to seek out, new finishing-move animations and alternative character outfits. It was the cherry upon the icing upon a cake that was already decidedly delicious. Tasty, tasty extras.

The Witcher series devs at CD Projekt Red have now confirmed that the studio's next big game, Cyberpunk 2077, will also ship with free DLC waiting in the wings. I mean, we all expected it to do so, because CDPR earned so much good will for its rollout of post-release Witcher 3 DLC. But now the team has definitively stated that, yes, free DLC is on the menu for Cyberpunk 2077.

A Kool-Aid/Family Guy meme is a definitive statement, right? Cool, cool. Check out the tweet exchange below, from the weekend just gone.

The exact nature of the DLC remains under wraps for now. But I'd expect this DLC to be a lot like what we got with The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt - a spread of small, cosmetic options and a handful of extra narrative beats that work around the main story and its primary side-quests. Nothing that you need to do, but stuff that's there, if you want it.

And you should want it, because if we're being honest, the free quests in The Witcher 3 were very good. One saw Geralt discover a village full of humans transformed into pigs by a curse; while another introduced us to a new witcher, the rather murderous Gaetan, who Geralt has to teach a lesson to (optionally fatally). Both of these examples made for memorable diversions from Geralt's path, and if Cyberpunk 2077's extras are of that standard, we'll all be very happy, um, robo-bunnies. (On topic, here's our pick of the best quests in The Witcher 3.)

In very related news, Cyberpunk 2077 just recently showcased a number of its weapons - including guns you don't even need to aim, to use. Which sounds like cheating to me, but then, in the future we'll all be too busy to look down sights. Probably. We also learned that it'll have interactive cutscenes, again illustrating just how pivotal a release Shenmue was, way back in 1999. Right? Right.

Cyberpunk 2077 will release for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC on November 19th, with 'next-gen' console versions following in 2021. It's also due out on Stadia in 2020, but that exact release date is TBC right now - something that's sure to have those eight players in waiting fairly frustrated.
