In all the discussion around Cyberpunk 2077's RPG mechanics, massive open world, characters, and story, I often forget that the game also involves a healthy dollop of FPS action. While by no means a shooter in the same way as Modern Warfare or Battlefield V, you can - and will - use weapons to get out of (or into, of course) a lot of situations in Night City.
Last night developer CD Projekt RED gave us an exciting new look at Cyberpunk 2077 in action, with a particular focus on all of the guns you can use in the game. Yes, there are a lot of them. It turns out there'll be three specific firearm classes in Cyberpunk 2077: Power, Tech, and Smart. Each class has its own advantages, disadvantages, and skills. It's up to you to work out which class suits your style of play best.
Power weapons are essentially like contemporary guns, but with some fun little twists here and there. As per the trailer, we see that some of the weapons in class have the ability to bounce bullets and hit targets that would otherwise be out of reach.
Tech weapons are more akin to the kind of guns you'd expect in a sci-fi game. These guns can make use of magnets for an alarmingly high rate of fire, basically making them railguns. These weapons are so powerful that you can use them to completely smash through walls, and even obliterate enemy cover entirely.
Finally, Smart weapons fire off guided projectiles that can track down targets on their own, even if they're attempting to escape from your oncoming fire. This is obviously a pretty ideal way to take out enemies while hiding behind cover.
Many types of weapons will play differently depending on what class they belong to. A Power shotgun, for example, can tear into an enemy with a single shot with less accuracy. A Smart shotgun, on the other hand, will track and hit multiple foes with one pull of the trigger, but won't do as much damage as its Power counterpart.
You can further customise any weapons you find with physical attachments and software mods. Physical attachments are the kind of things you'd expect: scopes, silencers, grips, and such to change the look and feel of your weapon. Software mods will affect things like damage and rate of fire.
And of course, Cyberpunk 2077's weapons will be further divided into the standard RPG rarity types: common, uncommon, rare, and legendary. Naturally, the rarer they are, the better they are... and the harder they are to get hold of. Many of the best legendary weapons will have special abilities that no other guns feature, but to get some of the best ones you'll need to take on some of the game's more prominent NPCs. Unlucky - for them.
