Cyberpunk 2077 studio CD Projekt RED has shared a few more details on the game's in-development multiplayer component - although it sounds like it's no longer the straightforward mode it once was. According to the developer, Cyberpunk 2077 multiplayer is now considered as an entirely separate entity to the in-development single-player RPG, and could even release as such.

"So, first, we don't call it modes," said CD Projekt CEO Adam Kaciński in an investor last week (as translated by Seeking Alpha). "It's a separate dedicated production, a big production. We think about it as a standalone product."

Not much is known about Cyberpunk 2077's mysterious multiplayer at all, apart from the fact that work started on it fairly late into the development of the single-player. Given the massive success of online modes like Red Dead Online and GTA Online - the latter of which will see its own standalone release on next-gen consoles next year - I'd wager that we'll be getting a sort of Cyberpunk Online.

In other words, I suspect we'll be running around the same Night City that we'll get in the single-player game, but with multiplayer quests, missions, races and other fun PVP stuff to keep us busy. I'd be fairly happy with that. Certainly, describing it as a big production suggests that it'll be something more than a battle royale or deathmatch-style multiplayer mode.

But while Kaciński says that CDPR thinks about it as a "standalone product", it's not clear yet whether or not it will actually be released as its own thing or if that's just the CEO's way of describing the scale of the multiplayer.

Last we heard the plan was to release Cyberpunk multiplayer as part of the RPG, but it could very well be that the mode/modes have grown so much in scale that it makes more sense to release it separately. The same thing happened with Naughty Dog during development of The Last Of Us Part II's multiplayer, after all.

For now we have the single-player part of Cyberpunk 2077 to look forward to. Given what what we've heard about the potential length of the core experience, I don't think any of us will be that fussed about waiting as long as we need to for the multiplayer.

Cyberpunk 2077 hits PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on December 10th. Next-gen versions are expected next year.
