Studio Throws Shade At 'Cyberpunk 2077' While Defending Open-World Game Delay

The delay to Crimson Desert will allow the team to add even more to the ARPG.

Pearl Abyss, the studio behind Black Desert Online and the upcoming Crimson Desert, has explained why it is delaying the new open world game while taking a potshot at Cyberpunk 2077 and CD Projekt Red.

Crimson Desert is promising to be a beautiful and brutal action role-playing game which will be every Dragon Age or Skyrimfan's cup of tea. Set in Pywel, the player will explore every inch of this fantasy world and their journey will change the course of the realm forever. It's also populated by a colourful cast of characters who all have their own story to tell and motivations for seeking out a life of danger and excitement. If the player wants the best of the best to lend their skills to their ends, they'll need to listen and learn about what makes these characters tick and earn their loyalty. So, in short - it's very Dragon Age and Skyrim. Well, even with its recent delay, it's possible that Crimson Desert will be released before Dragon Age 4 and The Elder Scrolls VI.

Originally slated for the end of this year, Pearl Abyss has elected to push the game's launch backwards to "dedicate more time to adding new ideas for an even deeper, more enriching game." Also, this choice has been made with the safety and well-being of its employees in mind and an updated release window for Crimson Desert will be communicated in due course.

Yet, while speaking in the company's latest fiscal report, chief financial officer Suk Woo Cho compared the game's situation to the much-maligned Cyberpunk 2077. "Lowering the quality to meet the deadline just like the recent Cyberpunk 2077 doesn't align with Pearl Abyss's development goals," said Suk (cheers to Kotaku for the source). "We are working hard to make Red Crimson with AAA game quality and depth."

Let's use the THINK acronym. Is it true? Yes, sadly. Is it helpful? Not hugely. Most gamers are going to be aware of the state of Cyberpunk 2077 and you don't need to draw attention to a different game that is out and available to play while explaining why yours is delayed. That's what most would call a poor marketing tactic. Is it inspiring or improving on the silence? Again, no, but it is slightly funny. Is it necessary? Definitely not. Last but not least, is it kind? I'll leave you to fill in the blank.
