Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson has announced when DC Comics' upcoming Black Adam movie will hit the silver screen in an incredible (and expectedly OTT) video in New York City.

Black Adam is the enemy of Captain Marvel, though he wasn't always a baddie. He's in fact the son of Pharaoh Ramesses II, named Teth-Adam, who is imbued with the power of stamina, speed, strength, wisdom, and courage. However, he is bewitched by a woman named Blaze who convinces him to kill the Pharaoh and seize Egypt for him and his partner. When the wizard Shazam discovers what's occurred, he strips Adam of his powers and he withers away and dies. The power was stored in a scarab ornament, which is then removed from the tomb of "Black Adam" by an archaeologist who kills in order to get his hands on the artefact. It then becomes clear that this archaeologist is a reincarnation of Teth-Adam, and he speaks Shazam's name to reinstate his powers as Black Adam.

As far as villainous backstories go, that's a cool one. The new movie acts as a sequel and a spinoff of Shazam! released in 2019. Production on the project is yet to commence, but Johnson has shared this brilliant video revealing the release date of the movie. In Times Square, New York City, the screens surrounding the person filming suddenly switch to darkness. Then, a singular golden lightning bolt emerges, and a voice breaks the silence. "The hierarchy of power in the DC Universe is about to change," says Johnson, and it's shown that the movie is aiming for July 29th, 2022. I say "aiming for" as it is possible that things will slide due to the impact of the pandemic on the entertainment industries.

He's super serious about turning superhero movies on their head, by the way. "What I am saying is that it doesn't matter to me, and it doesn't matter to Black Adam - you put them all on notice," said Johnson when he showed off the script for the movie. "Whether they're DC universe or part of the Marvel universe, they all get put on notice now." Moreover, Pierce Brosnan has bagged the role of Doctor Fate, and Aldis Hodge will play Hawkman, Noah Centineo will play Atom Smasher, Quintessa Swindell will play Cyclone, and Sarah Shahi and Marwan Kenzari are attached as yet-to-be-revealed characters.
