Batman doesn't go down on his girlfriends. At least, that's the latest word from DC in a strange controversy that has absolutely taken Twitter by storm over the last 24 hours.

Some context: in a recent interview with Variety, Harley Quinn co-creators and executive producers Justin Halpern and Patrick Schumacker spoke about the challenges involved in creating an R-rated show with DC characters. For the most part, the duo praised DC for letting them do all kinds of ridiculous and outrageous things with classic heroes and villains. Batman, however, is off-limits.

Before we go on, take a look at the upcoming Batman game Gotham Knights below. It's unlikely there'll be any cunnilingus in this one.

Halpern explained that there were just some things DC wouldn't let Batman do, the most surprising of which was orally pleasuring his girlfriend, Catwoman.

"In this third season of Harley we had a moment where Batman was going down on Catwoman," he said. "And DC was like, 'You can't do that. You absolutely cannot do that.' They're like, 'Heroes don't do that.' So, we said, 'Are you saying heroes are just selfish lovers?' They were like, 'No, it's that we sell consumer toys for heroes. It's hard to sell a toy if Batman is also going down on someone.'"

Obviously it's one thing to show Batman - or anyone - enjoying oral sex in a fun-for-all-the-family superhero adventure. But Harley Quinn has always been an R-rated show, and deciding Batman doesn't bother with that kind of thing is... kind of a weird hill to die on. That's what Twitter decided, anyway.

There we have it. Two absolute truths we should all remember about Batman going forward: he doesn't use guns, and he never goes down. Our condolences to Catwoman.
