The Suicide Squad is a reinterpretation of the movie of the same name from several years ago, and I'll tell you right now, it's very entertaining and very gory. Interestingly, director James Gunn originally wanted the group of loser supervillains to knock heads with the burly jobsworth, Superman.
"We really wanted to make sure that this stands on its own two feet. So... it's not a sequel, but there are some characters that were in the first movie, right? So it's not really a full reboot either. So we just call it James Gunn's The Suicide Squad," explained producer Peter Safran last month. The cast sees the return of a number of characters from the original movie, like Harley Quinn, Captain Boomerang, Rick Flag and Amanda Waller. However, Gunn had a lot of freedom from Warner Bros. when developing the direction that the new Suicide Squad movie would take. Speaking in an interview with Filmstarts, he revealed that the villain of the movie was actually meant to be Superman in the early drafts of the script.

Of course, Suicide Squad started with the aftermath of the death of Superman and The Suicide Squad relayed that Bloodsport is in prison as he shot the hero with a Kryptonite bullet. My thoughts? I'm glad it wasn't Superman in The Suicide Squad. Battling a giant purple starfish from outer space who could control people with terrifying tiny face-hugger clones of itself was bang on for the bizarre and brutal rollercoaster ride. Plus, there's a part of you that does root for Starro. This city is yours, babe. Anyway, Superman is surely tied to the story in some shape or form, and it's possible that this concept from Gunn could be realised on the silver screen. "I like this idea and if DC does this sequel, then please not without me," added the director.
