Dead Island 2 Isn't Out Yet But This Playable Build Has Leaked Online

Just when you think the Dead Island 2 saga couldn't get any more bizarre, players are now downloading and playing the sequel before it's even been released.

Admittedly, it's nowhere near the final version - this prototype reportedly dates from June 2015, which is, perhaps not coincidentally, about a month before developer Yager and publisher Deep Silver parted ways - but the game seems fully playable, albeit with missing or placeholder assets dotted here and there.

According to Eurogamer, the leak sprung on the V board of message board 4Chan, and the site has confirmed that this five-year-old build was indeed created by the original developer, Yager. Obviously, it's not a final product, but you can check out what a game part-way through development looks like right here:

Yes, Dead Island 2 is still in development. THQ Nordic surprised us all back in August last year when it confirmed that Dead Island 2 was still around, and that development has moved over to Dambuster Studios. For context, this is the third studio who has been given the sequel in the space of five years.

Development originally started at Yager Development, before Sumo Digital took over in 2016. Whether or not Dambuster will be the team to get this seemingly-doomed project over the line and into stores remains to be seen. Publisher Koch Media seemed pretty confident about the situation, though.

"Look, Dead Island is a very important brand for us and we've got to get it right," said CEO Klemens Kundratitz at the time. "It's just a testimony of our dedication to get it right.

"It's a great story to tell everyone that it's on its third studio, but we like to be judged on the end result and we're really confident that when it comes out it's going to be a kick-ass zombie game. We'll certainly give it all our power."
