It looks like Def Jam Recordings is gearing up to announce the first new entry in the Def Jam fighting franchise in over a decade. The publisher recently took to Twitter, as it so often does, to tease people about the possibility of a new game. However, things took an interesting turn when it then replied to that same tweet one day later with the promise of a "special announcement".
"Once our Twitter hits 1M, we have a special announcement for y'all," the publisher wrote. It's worth noting that social media managers are no stranger to pulling all sorts of tricks to drive followers and engagement, and dangling the possibility of a new Def Jam game in our faces is certainly one hell of a way to do just that.
That's not to say Def Jam Recordings doesn't have an announcement to share with us, but I am wondering if it's exactly what the publisher clearly knows we hope it is, you know?
I mean, the fact that Def Jam Recordings specifically teased this announcement underneath an earlier tweet about a new Def Jam game is certainly a promising sign. But will it be a sequel to 2004's celebrated Def Jam: Fight For NY, a remaster, or something entirely different? The way 2020 is going, I wouldn't be all that shocked if it ended up being a shameless mobile cash-grab.

The good news is that Def Jam Recordings has now hit the 1 million followers it coveted, so if the publisher really does have some news to share, we should be hearing about it very soon.
Personally, I wouldn't be against a remaster of Def Jam: Fight For NY, just because of how truly over-the-top ludicrous it was. If you never played it, it basically saw the likes of Snoop Dogg, Flavor Flav, Ludacris, Busta Rhymes and Sean Paul fighting your own player-made character as you rose up through the underground New York fighting circuit. Why? It was the 00s, that's why.
Weirdly enough, Ice-T recently expressed his desire to see Fight For NY remade for next-gen consoles. If you're not going to do it for the fans, Def Jam Recordings, do it for Ice-T. Always do it for Ice-T.
