Hold up, we thought that Diablo 4 was the most exciting Diablo project on the horizon, but with a new report - it might just be a Diablo 2 remake. According to a report from Bloomberg, studio Vicarious Visions is working alongside Diablo 4 developers to bring Diablo 2 back up to date.

It's reported that although a Diablo 2 remake was already in the planning stages from Blizzard's Team 1, that division of the company that was quietly dismantled late last year. Responsibilities for the remake have been handed over to Vicarious Visions - a team with credits on franchises like Crash Bandicoot and Tony Hawk's Pro-Skater. Vicarious Visions wasn't part of Blizzard the same way Team 1 was - instead it's owned by Activision who is apparently now involving itself more in Blizzard's projects. VV has now been merged into Blizzard to provide "long term support" according to GamesIndustry.Biz.

Team 1 had been having a little bit of a tough time with the content it was releasing in recent years. It's the crew that developed Warcraft III: Reforged, a remake of Warcraft III that was widely criticised for lack of features, glitches which ruined gameplay, and a strongarmed approach to making longterm Warcraft III players transfer to the new game. Reforged was the worst-reviewed Blizzard product to date.

Team 1 was also the team responsible for Heroes of the Storm and StarCraft II, both games that had development end on them in 2018 and 2020 respectively. Now it's reported by Bloomberg that the entire division has been slowly dismantled - staff were offered opportunities elsewhere in the company or have left Blizzard.

As a result, it's now Vicarious Visions that will be looking after the Diablo 2 remake that's in the works, and that team will be working alongside the Blizzard team working on the hotly anticipated Diablo 4. After a long time waiting, it looks like fans of the Diablo franchise have a good time ahead of them.
