'Dying Light 2' Developer Confirms Development Going Strong, Release Date Teased

Nobody is entirely sure what's happening with Dying Light 2 anymore, to the extent that many fans of the original open-world zombie parkour game were starting to get a little anxious about the sequel. Fortunately, developer Techland has provided a brief update on the game, along with the promise that more news is on the way in 2021.

A message from Techland on the game's official Discord server (via DSO Gaming) reads: "Happy Holidays from the Dying Light team! We've been, er, dying to update you all on how development has been going. We'll have fresh updates about Dying Light 2 in the new year."

Dying Light 2 was originally delayed back in January 2020. While it never had a solid release date, Techland had previously insisted the game was coming in the spring of 2020. Unfortunately, no new release window was provided at the time of this delay, leaving most fans to assume we'd have to wait until 2021 before the sequel finally launched.

In a statement shared on Twitter at the time of the original delay, Techland CEO Paweł Marchewka said: "We were initially aiming for a Spring 2020 release with Dying Light, but unfortunately, we need more development time to fulfil our vision. We will have more details to share in the coming months, and will get back to you as soon as we have more information."

"We apologise for this unwelcome news," he continued. "Our priority is to deliver an experience that lives up to our own high standards and to the expectations of you, our fans."

We already know that the ambitious zombie adventure is coming to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X at some point, although you have to wonder if the delay was in order to ditch the last-gen versions of the game and focus entirely on next-gen consoles. Looking at what CD Projekt RED is currently dealing with as Cyberpunk 2077 on PS4/Xbox One continues to attract criticism, it'd make sense if that were the move Techland had decided to make.

Whatever the case with Dying Light 2, I feel fairly confident that after the whole Cyberpunk 2077 fiasco, (most) fans are happy to wait as long it takes for the upcoming game to get everything just right. Hopefully 2021 gives us some substantial updates, and a real reason to look forward to the long-gestating zombie title again.
