'Dying Light' Getting Free Story Mode Update Ahead Of Sequel

I can think of few single-player video games that are as committed to consistently delivering new content as Dying Light. Techland's open world zombie RPG was released back in 2015, and the studio has spent the past five years toiling away on various - and substantial - bits and pieces that further flesh out an already comprehensive experience.

Despite the fact that Techland is currently hard at work on Dying Light 2 - which is expected at some point this year - the studio has, incredibly, prepared yet another free update for the original game. To celebrate the fifth anniversary of Dying Light, Techland has been rolling out a number of cool updates and promotions. The most recent includes a new, easier difficulty option for the game's story mode.

Techland explained that the point of this new difficulty setting was so that new or returning players could, if they wanted, breeze through the game to catch up on its story ahead of the sequel. How incredibly thoughtful.

An easier difficulty setting obviously isn't the most exciting thing for veteran Dying Light players, but Techaland has promised a month of in-game events between now and March 19. The next few weeks will include a number of "fan-favourite" events, and even a "few surprises". No doubt there'll be a little somethin' somethin' for everyone.

While most of the updates will be free for everyone to experience, there's also a new paid DLC pack that's available on all platforms now. The "5th Anniversary Bundle" comes loaded up with two new melee weapons and a brand-new shotgun. All three are extra-powerful and will likely be invaluable companions on your zombie-slaying adventures.

It's just as well we've got all this new content to dive into, as the sequel is still some time away. Dying Light 2 was originally targeting a spring 2020 release window, but it was announced in January this year that it would be pushed back to an unspecified date. This means it could arrive at any point this year - potentially even 2021.

"We were initially aiming for a Spring 2020 release with Dying Light 2," Techland CEO Paweł Marchewka said in a statement at the time."Unfortunately, we need more development time to fulfill our vision. We will have more details to share in the coming months, and will get back to you as soon as we have more information."

"We apologise for this unwelcome news," he continued. "Our priority is to deliver an experience that lives up to our own high standards and to the expectations of you, our fans."

It's unclear exactly why Dying Light 2 was delayed, but most suspect that it has something to do with the upcoming next-generation consoles. We already know that Techland wants to release the sequel on PS5 and Xbox Series X, so it'd make sense if the extra development time was down to this. Hopefully we'll get more news on the sequel soon.
