I guess this is an ICYMI, since this isn't wholly new news, but it sure is a timely reminder. You might already know that a movie based on publisher Koei Tecmo's Dynasty Warriors franchise was in the works. I mean, the project was announced in 2016, so, there's been enough time to catch that particular memo. But what you might not know: the movie's finished, and is releasing really, really soon.

April 29th, to be exact. That's when you'll be able to see Dynasty Warriors - in Hong Kong, anyway, as Niko Partners (China and Asia) games industry analyst Daniel Ahmad posts on Twitter.

Previously, the Dynasty Warriors movie was set to release in 2019 - but, obviously, that didn't happen. Bad news for fans who've been waiting for something like this since the first game was released way back in 1997, on the original PlayStation. But Ahmad's tweet appears to be the first confirmation that it's about to come out in Hong Kong - although an international release remains very much unconfirmed.

Directed by Roy Hin Yeung Chow, whose past credits as director include 2012's Nightfall and 2019's The Great Detective, Dynasty Warriors stars Louis Koo (Paradox, The White Storm) as the feathers-sporting franchise poster-boy Lu Bu, a powerful warrior who's appeared in several releases. Joining him is Ray Lui as the military-minded nobleman Yuan Shao and Kai Wang as the leader of Wei (and father of series favourite Cao Pi), Cao Cao.

Also appearing in the movie adaptation will be fan-favourite general Guan Yu, played by Geng Han; and Diaochan, who pitches her lovers Lu Bu and Dong Zhou against one another, played by Coulee Nazha.

Take a look at the 2018 trailer for Dynasty Warriors, below.

As you can see in the above, the movie sure does look like it's going to be as OTT of action as the games it's inspired by - games that pioneered the hack 'n' slash (sub-)genre of Musou, which has spread to cover the Legend of Zelda, Fire Emblem and Persona series in recent years. One vs a thousand battles? We're into it. Check out our reviews of the Dynasty Warriors-indebted Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity and Persona 5 Strikerss, if you're so inclined.
