EA Dropping FIFA Name Over Contract Dispute, According To Report

Electronic Arts is considering changing the title of its series of football sims and moving away from the FIFA name as the association football organisation wants it to pay an enormous amount of money to continue using the license.

EA Sports general manager had stated that the publisher was keen to renew its agreements with FIFA and therefore "continue to bring unrivalled authenticity in our EA Sports football games, now and for many years to come." However, earlier this week, it was found that EA filed multiple trademark applications for something called "EA Sports FC," suggesting that these chats between the company and the organisation hadn't gone swimmingly.

The New York Times now alleges in its own report that negotiations "hit the wall" as FIFA asked that EA pay double what it presently does for the license to use the name. That would see the company sink over $1 billion every four years into the ability to plaster "FIFA" across its games.

Furthermore, FIFA requested that the rights offered in the legitimate use of the license be diminished. "FIFA would prefer to limit EA's exclusivity to the narrow parameters around use in a soccer game, most likely in an effort to seek new revenue streams for the rights it would retain," read the report.

"EA Sports, meanwhile, contends the company should be allowed to explore other ventures within its FIFA video game ecosystem, including highlights of actual games, arena video game tournaments and digital products like NFTs."

I've been awake since 6.00am today and I've eaten two squares of dark chocolate for breakfast. Yet, in spite of my condition, I can see that you could do a lot with $1 billion and the solution to EA's unwillingness to pay for that title is sorted with a simple name change. After all, the FIFA series of games is a part of countless gamers' libraries and the saying goes "a rose by any other name would still offer the same stuff as last year's entry, bar some flashier graphics."

Of course, nothing is set in stone at the moment, even when we consider those new trademarks that popped up. The report says that the decision will be public knowledge by the end of this year, but EA is fairly certain that we'll be living in a "post-FIFA future."
