Fight Night Could Return, EA Sports Announcement Due Soon

2021 is the ten year anniversary of Fight Night Champion, so it'd only be proper to see the immensely popular boxing series return for the newest generation consoles. This might not be wishful thinking, as EA is apparently going to announce that it's bringing back a "long-running franchise" during its summer showcase.

Released for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in 2011 to rave reviews, Fight Night Champion is "almost perfect" and there's no denying that it "still holds up incredibly in both graphics and gameplay." So, it's strange that there's been nary a whisper on the wind of a new Fight Night.

In fact, we miss the series so dearly that this new game from developer Steel City Interactive is ticking all of the boxes as a spiritual successor to Fight Night. Esports Boxing Club is in its alpha stage of development and it offers players intricate "movement, corner systems, backfoot combat, career aspects, four directional punches, adrenaline, feints, thirst six punch control, and ring-craft" mechanics.

Check out gameplay of Esports Boxing Club right here, featuring motion-capture from actual boxers which makes the animation look as fluid as it would be in the real ring.

Running through the schedule for the EA Play Live Spotlight series, the company says that we should expect to see an "extremely cool new addition to an extremely popular and long-running EA SPORTS franchise" on July 20th. The Spotlights serve to offer a sneak peek at the game and showcase the talent that was involved with its development - for example, the "EA <3s Independent Studios" Spotlight features It Takes Two, Lost In Random and Knockout City developers.

What's more is that Say Cheese TV (owned by blogger Shawn Cotton) shared a collage on Twitter of dormant EA Sports properties, including Def Jam, SSX, NBA Street and Fight Night, adding that a "huge announcement" is in store for July 20th. Whether Say Cheese TV is springing off the comment of the company regarding this "long-running EA SPORTS franchise" or whether it knows which of these options is coming back remains to be seen.

However, a Spotlight is more than seeing a trailer or a snazzy logo and release window in EA Play Live and radio silence for the next few months. In a panel, we're bound to receive a lot of detail on whatever this upcoming game is, and wouldn't it be an excellent opportunity to delve into the legacy of Fight Night and how this new game pays tribute to its origins? Of course, I'm getting ahead of myself here as I'd be well up for SSX to turn up in the showcase. We'll let you know if we learn more about a possible Fight Night comeback.
