EA Working On Returning IP That Will Make Fans 'Very Happy'

One of Electronic Arts' younger studios is reportedly working on bringing back a well-established IP that should make a lot of fans "very happy".

EA Motive has established itself as a killer studio in the last few years, most notably through its work on the single-player campaign of Star Wars Battlefront 2 and the excellent sci-fi dogfighting sim Star Wars: Squadrons. But with EA's exclusive license to develop and publish Star Wars games now over, and the studio's ambitious next-gen game Gaia shut down after six years in development, it sounds like Motive might now be turning its attention to the publisher's vast back catalogue.

This comes from reporter and industry insider Jeff Grub. Speaking on a recent episode of his GamesBeat Decides podcast, the writer and his co-host Mike Minotti were asked by a listener if they know what EA Motive has in the pipeline. Grubb admits that he knows what the studio is working on right now, but that he can't say. His only clue is that it's an "established IP" that he believes will make a lot of people happy.

This doesn't give too much away, but we can at least narrow it down. We can rule out the likes of Star Wars: Battlefront, Battlefield, and Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, as any potential sequels or projects in those series will most likely be handled by DICE and Respawn Entertainment. We can also strike Need For Speed off the list, since Criterion is currently working on the next game in the racing series. BioWare is on Mass Effect and Dragon Age right now, so that's covered.

It could be a new Star Wars game, but that seems unlikely right now given all the other developers and publishers who are currently able to play in that particular sandbox. Some fans are hoping it'll be a sequel to 2010's Dante's Inferno, or that's a fairly obscure title that I'm not sure that many people would be happy to see it back. I suppose the same could be said for a third Mirror's Edge. Great series, but one that never really got the love it deserved.

Where does that leave us? My best bet is Dead Space 4. The sci-fi survival horror franchise has been on ice since 2013's messy Dead Space 3, and fans have been clamouring for a revival ever since. EA certainly appears to have learned via the success of Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and the failure of Anthem that single-player games are far from dead, so who knows? Maybe there's a room for a little horror from the publisher in the coming years.
