Elden Ring has been delayed. Developer FromSoftware has confirmed that its upcoming open-world action-RPG will now release February 25, 2022. It was originally slated to launch in January.
In a statement shared to Twitter, FromSoftware explained that the "depth and strategic freedom of the game exceeded initial expectations," - which basically means it needs more time in the oven. Delaying a game to ensure it can meet its lofty ambitions is never a bad thing, of course, and if anything has us more excited to see the final product.
Important message:
ELDEN RING will release on Feb 25, 2022, as the depth & strategic freedom of the game exceeded initial expectations. Thank you for your trust & patience. We look forward to seeing you experience the game in the Closed Network Test in Nov.

The good news here is that the Elden Ring team did confirm that we'll be able to get our hands on the game next month as part of a closed network test. You can find out the exact dates here, as well as everything you need to do to get signed up to be a part of the test.
We can also take some comfort in the fact that being nudged back from January to February is hardly the biggest delay we've ever seen, and should help to make an already packed January 2022 release schedule a little bit more manageable.
