Relic Entertainment has announced that the hotly antipcated historical real-time strategy game will be holding an open "technical stress test" this weekend. Starting Friday and running through till Monday, players everywhere can get their hands on the game for the first time and help push it to its limits to see if it's ready. The upshot, of course, is that you can play Age Of Empires 4 for free this weekend!

This follows a successful closed test in which a limited number of players were recently invited in to come and check out the game's multiplayer modes. This upcoming weekend will offer the same access in terms of game modes, just with more players. Much more players.

The Age Of Empires 4 technical stress test kicks off at 6pm BST on Friday September 17, and will run until 6pm the following Monday. You can get access via Steam or the Xbox Insider Hub app, and you'll be able to play through the tutorial and Mission Zero, plus a bunch of custom multiplayer matches against AI opponents. But the real focus is on human vs human multiplayer to make sure the servers don't explode and kill us all when the game launches next month.

"We are interested in driving as many people into the Technical Stress Test build as possible during this window to make sure that our matchmaking, lobbies and additional systems hold strong," Relic explained in a blog post.

You won't even need a super powerful PC, either. As long as you meet the game's minimum requirements, you're in!

"We're introducing additional in-game settings in the Technical Stress Test, which means that you'll be able to join us so long as you meet the Age of Empires IV minimum spec," the developer continued. "During this event, the game will automatically detect and select the correct settings based on hardware, including settings specifically included for min spec devices."
