Welcome to Fallmania.

Mediatonic's alternative battle royale Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout has been out for less than a month, but it's already taken the world by storm. Gamers around the world have fallen for its colourful action and unpredictable, chaotic energy. One of the best things about the game is that anyone can come out on top and take home the crown.

Maybe that's why it's so surprising that Fall Guys already has an (unofficial) tournament - with a genuinely decent cash prize up for grabs. Esports player and speedrunner "GrandPooBear" has announced Fallmania. Starting August 27th, Fallmania will see hopefuls duke it out in Fall Guys across a "series" of events, ending in one streamer taking home a $5000 prize. Since this isn't a game that deals in second, third, or fourth places, it really is winner-takes-all.

If you're interested in being considered for the tournament, you can sign up here. Remember that everyone who steps into a game of Fall Guys has a chance of winning, so this could be one of the more interesting competitive events of this year. It's not entirely clear how many events there'll be, or what exactly they'll involve. I'd assume players will simply be asked to compete across a series of standard games, but perhaps GrandPooBear has something a little more ambitious planned.

What's really impressive about this is that Mediatonic never actually designed Fall Guys with esports in mind... which I guess you can tell if you've actually played the game for more than ten seconds.

"I'm glad we didn't approach any of the design from a competitive perspective," senior level designer Megan Ralph told me ahead of the game's release. "I think it would have been worse. It's nice that we made things that we thought would be fun, and the competitive angle has become a possibility from that point."

Whether you've played Fall Guys or not, this is definitely sounding like an event to watch. The battle royale is tense enough when it's just a cosmetic crown up for grabs. Throw $5000 into the mix? That's almost too intense.
