It was only a matter of time.

In a surprise move last year, Microsoft announced that it had entered into an agreement to acquire ZeniMax Media, parent company of Bethesda Softworks for an eye-watering $7.5 billion. This massive deal saw juggernaut IPs such as The Elder Scrolls, Fallout, Wolfenstein, DOOM, and Quake become part of the Xbox family.

The ramifications of this deal are far-reaching and, in all honesty, still being worked out to this day. One thing fans were quick to point out, however, was that Fallout: New Vegas 2 was once again a tantalising possibility. Microsoft acquired Obsidian Entertainment, the studio behind the original New Vegas in 2018. With Obsidian and the Fallout license back under the same roof, it seemed getting a sequel going after all these years would be a no-brainer.

Obsidian currently has its hands full with a few other projects, of course. There's the delightful and constantly evolving multiplayer experience Grounded, for one thing. Then there's the promising-sounding Avowed, which is already sounding like a potential rival to The Elder Scrolls series. Despite all this, it sounds as if Fallout: New Vegas 2 is in the works.

This comes via leaker and industry insider Tyler McVicker, formerly of the Valve News Network. McVicker has been a proven source on all things Valve for a long time now, even leaking the existence of a Half-Life prequel years before Half-Life: Alyx was announced.

In a video announcing his new channel and plans for the future as he steps away from the Valve News Network, McVicker teased some of the projects he's been hearing about, that he'll discuss in more detail in future videos. At the 3:56 mark, he talks a little but about the rumoured Nintendo Switch Pro, The Legend Of Zelda's 35th anniversary plans, a bunch of other Bethesda and Microsoft games... and Fallout: New Vegas 2.

McVicker doesn't say anything about Fallout: New Vegas 2 other than that he has information on it, so there's no telling how far along in development the game might be - or if Obsidian is even the studio working on the project. Given that the Microsoft/ZeniMax deal isn't really officially over the line yet, whatever McVicker has heard could have been nothing more than very early talks.

Still, this is the first time in a while we've heard any rumblings in regards to a sequel to one of the best Fallout games, and the Microsoft/Bethesda union does mean that such a sequel could finally happen. Watch this space.
