I back it.

Against all odds, the live-action Sonic The Hedgehog movie ended up being one of the best and brightest surprises of 2020. It's safe to say, then, that fans everywhere are already eagerly anticipating the sequel, which was announced just a few months back... much to the delight of everyone who wants to see Jim Carrey's manically marvelous Robotnik go up against Ben Scwartz's bouncy Sonic once more.

Of course any good sequel also needs to introduce some new characters into the mix, and it's looking like director Jeff Fowler will absolutely be recruiting more of Sonic's mates from the video games. The first film's post-credits scene confirmed that the blue blur's best bud Tails will be getting in on the action, and we're now hearing rumours that Knuckles the Echinda will also be putting in an appearance.

A recent report from The Illuminerdi claims that Knuckles, who first showed up in 1994's excellent Sonic The Hedgehog 3, will have a large role in the upcoming sequel - possibly as an antagonist alongside Robotnik. While I can't speak for the credibility of this report, I can at least delight in the inspired fan-casting that's accompanied the rumours.

I can honestly say that at no point in my life had I ever given a second thought as to who might play Knuckles in a Sonic movie. Mostly because I'd convinced myself the first Sonic movie would never get far enough to have a sequel, let alone one that included Knuckles. But here we are, and the internet has fully sold me on the idea of Dwayne "The Rock" in the role... now I can't see anyone else doing it.

I back it all the way. Johnson is a safe pair of hands in any film he's in, and could definitely inject the right blend of fun and tough-guy goofiness required for a role like Knuckles. A lot of fans have pointed to his turn in Disney's Moana as the demigod Maui, and I can totally see that. Sonic The Hedgehog 2 isn't expected until April 2022, but hopefully we get some official news on casting and characters soon.
