According to a leak through the Microsoft Store, Far Cry 6 is set to release in May 2021, which is several months later than we would have expected for the anticipated future entry to the series.

Boasting the "most expansive Far Cry playground" ever, Far Cry 6 is set on the tropical island of Yara. A fictional setting, Ubisoft were enthusiastic to draw upon new sources of inspiration, and players will explore dense city streets, gorgeous beaches and coastlines, and shadowy jungles. "We wanted to tell a story about revolution, and when you tell a story about revolution, you're talking about guerrilla warfare. When you're talking about guerrilla warfare, you go to Cuba," said narrative director Navid Khavari in an interview earlier this year.

The beauty of Yara has been emphasised again and again, as "a living postcard from the '60s that players can experience and walk through," and these places will be elevated to the next level on the powerful PS5 and Xbox Series X. Moreover, it's an all-new story for players to take on, and one that has multiple moral layers to peel away.

Yara is under the thumb of its dictator, Anton Castillo, played by Giancarlo Esposito of The Mandalorian and Breaking Bad. Though the Yarans were once enamoured with Castillo's dreams for the island, his methods are cutthroat and violent, and he is training his young son to step into his shoes after he is gone.

"As Dani Rojas (playable as a female or male character), you will help stoke the fires of revolution," said Ubisoft in the official description of the game, and promised a "powerful array" of weapons, vehicles, companions, and Fangs for Hire to get the job done.

In the company's third quarter earnings call, it confirmed that the pandemic had caused Far Cry 6 and Rainbow Six Quarantine's launches to be pushed into the next fiscal year, in order to "leverage their full potential in the context of production challenges." Far Cry 6 was originally intended to launch in February 2021, though the company did state that both games would be out in the wild before September 2021.

A rather wide window to work with, but we expected that Far Cry 6 would launch in March or April. It in fact transpires that the game will be arriving in May; May 26th, 2021, more specifically. This was discovered through a listing on the Microsoft Store, and the date hasn't been deleted... yet. We must consider this date with caution, though, as it hasn't been officially announced by Ubisoft. Though this is a little later than we would expect for Far Cry 6, it's possible that the studio is giving its team more time than it needs so that the work is completed without crunching.

Far Cry 6 will launch for Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4 and PC. If you're hankering after open-world exploration, a hefty helping of chaos, and you're unable to sit still until 2021, then Assassin's Creed Valhalla might be just the ticket. And, yes, you can pet the cats and the dogs in medieval England.
