Final Fantasy XIV players flocked to the online RPG in their hundreds yesterday in order to pay tribute to Berserk creator Kentaro Miura. The critically acclaimed manga artist and writer passed away earlier this month, at just 54 years old.

The influence of Miura's work on video games over the years has been, without a whiff of hyperbole, seismic. The likes of Dark Souls and Final Fantasy owe the artist a tremendous debt, and so it was that social media was soon flooded with players paying tribute to him via Final Fantasy XIV.

As you can see above, hundreds of characters gathered in Ul'dah, one of the game's starting cities. Others arranged to meet at Limsa Lominsa. All offered tribute to Miura by lining the virtual streets, swords planted firmly in the ground having switched to the Dark Knight class - one which takes great inspiration from Berserk.

Twitter user localhyurzen saw so many players lining up in the Balmung server that the game struggled to load all the attendees in at once. Other users reported lines stretching from one side of Ul'dah to the other. "I went to check the other parts and it wouldn't let me back to the main part for a few moments because of how congested it is," wrote Reddit user Sindelta.

"He left such a deep impact on the community as a whole," wrote one user of Miura. "A creative legend. I remember the KyoAni fire... It's such a horrible loss when we lose people who are young and so brim of passion. Any loss of life is sad- but man. This resonates. Remember to never take ever so fragile life for granted."

Kentaro Miura sadly passed away on May 6 from acute aortic dissection. Young Animal magazine announced his death via the official Berserk Twitter account yesterday. Our thoughts are with his friends, family, and many fans around the world at this difficult time.
