'Final Fantasy 16' Reportedly Coming Sooner Than Expected

It's been in development for four years so far.

Final Fantasy 16 could be coming to the PlayStation 5 sooner than we think, according to an industry insider.

When it was revealed in Sony's September showcase, Final Fantasy 16 came out with all guns blazing. Or, more aptly, all swords swishing. Compared to Final Fantasy 15, this game will take place in a very medieval-inspired setting, with big battles, bethemothic beasts, and British accents. And, surprisingly enough, the trailer showed us cutscenes as well as substantial clips of gameplay, which suggests that Square Enix has had this game on the back burner for a while. That then begs the question: when could we expect to see Final Fantasy 16 on the PS5?

Jason Schreier, reporter for Bloomberg, peppered in the new details in the latest episode of the TripleClick podcast. "I've heard from people who know the game, have worked on the game or are familiar with the game's development that it's actually been in development for at least four years in some capacity," he said. "So it's coming sooner than people think," he concluded. So how soon is "sooner"?

Producer Naoki Yoshida enthused that the next entry to the series will "provide players an experience unmatched in terms of story and gameplay", and that Final Fantasy 16's "next big information reveal is scheduled for 2021." Combine these comments with Schreier's info and what is already on its way to the PlayStation 5, and we might get our mitts on Final Fantasy 16 in late 2021 to early 2022.

The PlayStation 5's launch roster is stacked with titles like Sackboy: A Big Adventure, Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales, and Demon's Souls. Multiplatform games like Watch Dogs Legion, Assassin's Creed Valhalla, Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, and Cyberpunk 2077 will prevent PS5 players from twiddling their thumbs towards the end of the year. Then, 2021 brings even more games to PS5, like Deathloop, Grand Theft Auto V, and Hitman 3. Games galore, in short.

Filling out the launch schedule in 2021 to 2022 would be a smart move, especially for an exclusive like Final Fantasy 16. As aforementioned, the next time we'll hear about the game's expected release window will be next year, but we do have a lot to keep us busy in between.Featured Image Credit: Square Enix
