'Final Fantasy VII Remake' Is A March PS Plus Freebie, Leak Suggests

The PlayStation Plus free games for March 2021 are widely expected to be announced later tonight during the State Of Play broadcast, and fans are desperate to know what free titles are on the way for the next month. Ahead of the big reveal, an intriguing new leak suggests Sony could planning to drop a massive surprise that none of us saw coming.

A wild last-minute rumour alleges that one of free games for March 2021 will be none other than Final Fantasy VII Remake. XboxEra podcast co-host Shpeshal Ed is the source of this particular claim. He recently took to Twitter to warn fans that if they haven't picked up Final Fantasy VII Remake yet, they need to make sure they're subscribed to PlayStation Plus in March.

As incredible as this would be, I do need to pop my sceptical hat on for a second. Final Fantasy VII Remake has been available on PlayStation 4 for less than a year, and Sony doesn't typically bring major AAA releases to the service until they've been on sale for at least a year or so. Putting Square Enix's 2020 RPG on PS Plus so soon would be a huge move, and definitely not one any of us would have expected.

With that said, February's free games do suggest that Sony is eager to please fans by including more high-profile releases in the service. This month saw the twin threat of Control and Shadow Of The Tomb Raider join Concrete Genie, two major titles and a smaller (but no less wonderful) game to round out the offering.

Final Fantasy VII Remake is fast approaching its one-year anniversary, so making the game free for PS Plus subscribers for a month would be a neat way to mark its first Birthday in April. It'd also be the perfect time to announce an upgraded version of the RPG for PlayStation 5, surely? The State Of Play broadcast kicks off at 10pm (UK time) tonight, so we don't have long to wait until we know for sure.
