The phenomenally popular horror game Five Nights At Freddy's is to receive a new fan-made remake - with not only the blessing of the original's creator, Scott Cawthorn, but also his money, too.

PC Gamer (via Eurogamer) reports that Cawthorn is (sort of) collaborating with some of the Five Nights series community's own developers, in a project called the Fazbear Fanverse Initiative. He'll be putting cash into the project, but won't be doing any development himself. Cawthorn confirmed the initiative with an announcement on Reddit where he wrote:

"Hey guys, I wanted to tell you all about a little project that I've been working on for a while now; it's a giant collaboration involving several fangame creators who have made some of the most popular fangames over the years here in the community. It's a project that's designed to invest into those franchises, give back to the developers, and hopefully bring new entries to those franchises as well!"

He adds: "There have been some great fan-made spin-off universes created in this community, and I want to see them keep going; that's why I've put some of my own cash toward development of new games in those game series. However, I'm going to stay OUT of the development side of things so that these creators can do their thing."

Amongst these fan-made games is a remake-cum-reimagining of 2014's original Five Nights At Freddy's - a point-and-click-style horror title where the player had to survive the night at Freddy Fazbear's Pizza restaurant, home to murderous animatronic creatures, with super-limited resources (budget cuts, whatcha gonna do?). It did extremely well for itself, spawning a number of sequels and spin-offs across other media, including novels, and a film adaptation remains in the works.

The remake will be helmed by Phisnom, while the other games in the Fazbear Fanverse Initiative are: Five Nights At Candy's 4 by Emil; The Joy of Creation: Ignited Collection by Nikson; Popgoes Evergreen by Kane; and One Night at Flumpty's 3 by Jonochrome.

Says Cawthorn of these Initiative creations:

"Since some of the older fangames may have used copyrighted assets or assets created by other people, etc., some are getting remade in part, or remade entirely! Some are being remade completely from scratch with new character designs, new sound design and new artwork!

"It's a big project on the part of all of these creators, so please show these developers some support! I want to see these games on consoles, and then maybe, if it goes well, I can add more fangames to this project in the future! So yeah, I'd really like to see this turn into something cool."

All the games listed above will be released, for free, on GameJolt and mobile devices, and as Cawthorn says, they'll hopefully come out for consoles, too.
