Football Club Announces New Player In GTA On Transfer Deadline Day

“He knows what it takes.”

Newport County Football Club just revealed their new striker... through Grand Theft Auto V.

That's certainly a way to do it, and the announcement has gathered a lot of attention for its unconventional style. To be honest, news about transfers isn't always presented in the most engaging of formats. It's usually an article with a group of names and a group of numbers, padded out with a handful of lines describing how good these particular players are. So, why not have a little fun with it?

In the video, Michael from Grand Theft Auto V is reclining on a chair by his pool. He stands and strolls towards the house, calling out, "Honey, I'm home!" The player then decides to change characters, and the satellite map of San Andreas pans out to a satellite map of Barnardtown, in Newport, south Wales. It zooms in on the Rodney Parade, the club's stomping ground, before revealing that Nicky Maynard is the new kid on the block. He's on loan to Newport County from Mansfield Town, and this agreement will be active until the end of the campaign.

While he was with Bury Football Club, his performance helped elevate the team from League Two to League One. Moreover, he scored 21 league goals in the 2018-2019 season, securing his title as the third highest scorer in the league at that time. He's enthusiastic to join Newport County, and the club praised his storied matches over his fifteen-year career. "I had a few offers from clubs in this league and in League One, but the gaffer got hold of me, told me about the club and how it's going forward, so hopefully it works out for me here," said Maynard in Newport County's post. "I want to come in, score goals and help the team push towards the top of the table."

Michael Flynn, manager of the club, is also thrilled to add Maynard to the fray. "Nicky has been a proven goalscorer throughout his career and will bring a wealth of experience to the club. He knows what it takes to get to League One after his promotion with Bury a few seasons ago," he said. "He's still a player who is very hungry and I'm sure he will score the goals to keep us at the top end of the table between now and the end of the season."
