After Ubisoft releases its remake of The Sands of Time in 2021, there will be another proper go at rebooting the Prince of Persia IP, according to a leak.

Announced a few months ago (though it had been rumoured for much longer than that), The Sands of Time remake is on its way to PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One with new character models and "entirely new cinematic sequences along with enhanced voices, sounds, parkour animations, and soundtrack". Moreover, players will have the choice between original and modern controls for epic combat encounters, and the original Prince of Persia from 1989 will be bundled with the remake. This will be accessible from the main menu, making it an amazingly nostalgic adventure for fans.

"You will notice a lot of difference in terms of variation, in terms of visual art, lighting, VFX so you will definitely recall fondly the original game, but you will feel like playing a game made in 2020 and playable in 2021," said game director Pierre Sylvain-Gires when he chatted to us in September. And, Yuri Lowenthal, the actor playing The Prince, affirmed that every scene has been subject to motion-capture, with the ensemble performing on a stage. "We essentially rewound time so that I could go back and do it again," added Lowenthal.

Ubisoft has been careful to call The Sands of Time a remake rather than a remaster or a reboot, because the reinterpretation of the 2003 game "stay[s] true to the original design". Is this a canny way of capping expectations, or is this due to the possibility that the studio has its nose to the grindstone, fully rebooting the franchise? According to a recent leak, it's the latter. Now, we've got to take these claims with a pinch of salt, as Ubisoft itself hasn't confirmed anything of the like. We'll just judge them, and we'll come to our own conclusions in a civilised manner. Ready to read? Okay.

LazyAssassin, a YouTuber with almost 20 million views on their channel of various playthroughs and supplying industry news spoken in Hindi, accurately predicted The Sands of Time remake. Their leak was posted on their channel two months ahead of the announcement, and they were correct about the recasting of Farrah. This is looking like a steady track record already. Now, in a video covering the Cayo Perico heist in Grand Theft Auto Online, they have more to share about the future of Prince of Persia.

"Sands of Time is coming next year anyway, but aside from that Ubisoft is working on a completely new PoP game that won't be a remake," said LazyAssassin. "Right now the early concept is being worked on, where game mechanics are completely being redesigned and you can say that it'll reboot the series. It'll probably come out in 2023 or 2024 and If I get any news regarding it, I'll definitely tell you." This has been translated from Hindi into English on Reddit, so there may be slight differences in the two languages.

Well, the prospect of a fully rebooted Prince of Persia is getting a lot of fans hot under the collar. An open-world affair, with RPG elements borrowed from Assassin's Creed, with a more complex twist on the original's storyline? Sounds good to me.
