Gamer Forced To Sell Switch To Pay Rent, Internet Saves The Day

After going through a tough break, this Animal Crossing player had to sell their Switch in order to make ends meet. They'd resigned themselves to skipping out on gaming for the foreseeable future, until someone bought their Switch back and returned it to them for zero fee.

Yesterday, Reddit user SketchKYR uploaded a wonderful drawing of Truffles, the peppy pig villager, to the game's subreddit. "I really miss playing Animal Crossing," they said, explaining that they parted with their Switch to find the rest of the money for this month's rent. "The next best thing? Drawing a Villager a day until I get it back," continued the player, and their sketch got a lot of praise from other users.

In the comments, they shared that their mother had tragically died in 2020, and Animal Crossing: New Horizons released shortly after her passing. Playing the game offered some solace from the traumatic loss of their parent, as well as connecting them to their mother in a unique way. "Getting the letters from 'Mom' in the game made me feel like she was still around at least in part," they said. "This game has also helped me with my depression."

The player's "Mom" will send a letter on the first day of every month, telling them a story about their youth or their hometown, and she packages presents which are very rare items in the game. Mom's Artwork, Candles, Apron, Plushie, Cushion, Tea Set and others appear to be handmade by the character, and players have even attempted to recreate Mom's items in reality owing to their popularity and their emotional weight. SketchKYR was optimistic that they'd be able to get their Switch back in the future, but felt like filling the void with colour was the most relaxing way to soothe the heartache (plus, it's clear that they're a great artist already).

No more than three hours after they shared their drawing of the villager, SketchKYR returned to the subreddit bearing brilliant news. "My heart is full!! A very kind Redditor helped me get my Switch back!" they announced. "I will be playing this all night with my twin to catch up. Thank you so much! I will pay it forward and I hope many blessings come your way!" The community were as astonished as they were, and praised the generosity of the person who managed to buy it on their behalf. "It felt like a freaking miracle. I started sobbing. I couldn't thank them enough!" continued SketchKYR. Others commented on how their faith in humanity had been restored by the story, and the player agreed. "There are good people in the world. I'm still learning that. Slowly but surely," they replied. And, don't worry - they've promised to keep up with their daily Animal Crossing sketches.
