A complete 1999 Pokémon card set in astonishingly high quality condition has been sold for $666,000 at auction, setting an eye-watering new record for the collectible card sphere.

The set was graded professionally, and found to fall into the category "PSA GEM-MT 10." For those who aren't familiar with the system, this means that the collection is in "virtually perfect" condition, and "allowances are made for slight printing imperfections if they don't impair the card's overall appeal." It isn't only about colour and corners, though. For the cards to qualify into GEM-MT 10, "the image must be centered on the card within a tolerance not to exceed 55/45 to 60/40 percent on the front and 75/25 percent on the reverse." This is what cuts the mustard between a Gem Mint card and a Mint card, and the difference can lead to thousands upon thousands of dollars heaped on the cards at auction.

This set, which reached $666,000 on Goldin Auctions, contained a first edition Charizard card. This is the key that unlocked the value of the set, as the card on its ownsome is sold for stunning amounts of cheddar. Rapper and streamer Logic spent $226,000 to snag his card, but that's not even the highest price that's ever been achieved for a card like this. A Blastoise card, one of only two that were printed to be "Presentation" pieces for Nintendo's approval, scored a sale of $360,000 at auction. Incredible scenes. I truly couldn't conceive of having that amount of moolah in the first place, least of all being free enough to spend it on one collectible. Just the one purchase, and kaboom.

2021 is going to be a big year for Pokémon as the company paints the town red in the celebrations. It's the 25th anniversary of the series, if you could believe it, and the party is only just beginning. Pokémon TCG cards are rumoured to be arriving in McDonald's Happy Meals, and throughout the year, reprints of the classic cards will go on sale and culminate in October. Katy Perry is collaborating with The Pokémon Company to release songs related to the games, and it assures that even more artists will be unveiled as the months go by.
