In case it wasn't clear from its reveal trailer on the weekend (and let's be fair, it wasn't clear), WB Games Montréal's forthcoming Gotham Knights will not be connected to the wider Arkham series of games.

What was clear in the trailer, shown during the DC FanDome event on Saturday (22nd August), is that Bruce Wayne/Batman is dead. Gone. An ex-bat. A billionaire buried. Gotham Knights is set in the aftermath of the Caped Crusader's passing, and sees players assume the roles of a familiar supporting cast: Red Hood (Jason Todd), Batgirl (Barbara Gordon), Robin (Tim Drake), and Nightwing (Dick Grayson).

Gotham Knights is an open-world (covering five boroughs of Gotham City) action RPG, which can be played solo or in co-op alongside one other human-controlled hero. The 2021-due game's synopsis reads as follows:

"Batman is dead. A new expansive, criminal underworld has swept the streets of Gotham City. It is now up to the Batman Family - Batgirl, Nightwing, Red Hood, and Robin - to protect Gotham, bring hope to its citizens, discipline to its cops, and fear to its criminals. From solving mysteries that connect the darkest chapters in the city's history to defeating notorious villains in epic confrontations, you must evolve into the new Dark Knight and save the streets from descent into chaos."

Which all sounds good and wholesome and ever-so-Batman-y - albeit without Batman himself. (Although Mr Freeze is here.) But due to the confusion around whether or not Gotham Knights connects to the Arkham series - that's Rocksteady's Asylum, City and Knight, and WB Games Montréal's own Origins - its makers have subsequently had to explicitly state: no, it does not.

Comicbook.com reached out to WB Games Montréal with said question: where does this game fit in with all things Arkham? And the answer, bluntly, is that it doesn't. Rather, it's going to be something all new. Said the studio: "Gotham Knights is an original story set in DC's Batman Universe and not connected to the Arkham series."

So that's us told, then. The DC FanDome also saw Rocksteady's new Batman Universe-connected game, the 2022-slated and Metropolis-set Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League, get a reveal trailer, albeit one with no gameplay just yet (and that one is connected to the Arkham-verse). We did get to see some Gotham Knights gameplay, though, and it looks an awful lot like what you can watch in the video below.
