Grand Theft Auto PS2 Remakes Could Be Announced Tonight, Insiders Say

It's possible that tonight's PlayStation State Of Play stream will include some exciting Grand Theft Auto-related news from Rockstar Games. Insiders over at the GTA Forums have been teasing an incoming reveal for the past few weeks, and it looks like the time may finally be upon us.

Last month, reports surfaced that suggested Rockstar was diving into its back catalogue to revisit three of its most popular games - GTA III, Vice City, and San Andreas - as part of a special anniversary remastered collection. Speculation began when various prominent members of the GTA Forums dropped a series of coordinated teases.

User and insider Mach1bud kicked things off by writing "soon" in a seemingly innocent thread. A little after that, WildBrick142 hinted that Mach was leaking in the wrong thread, to which Mach responded that it was intentional. He said if he put the tease in the right thread, would have been too obvious. The thread was subsequently tagged with 'GTA III', "GTA VC' and 'GTA SA'.

Following this, Mach started dropping a series of cryptic posts about how he'll be getting his "truck" in less than 90 days, that he'll be getting a trailer for it soon, and that it should have plenty of power with its new engine. Fans believe that the forum user is sneakily using jargon that could apply to vehicles and video games to make his point.

This is where things start to get really interesting. On Saturday, February 21, forum user ClimaCool responded to one of Mach's mysterious posts, writing: "Better start warming up your engine. February 25 is coming." Just a few days later, Sony would announce a PlayStation State Of Play for February 25 - tonight - which is set to contain news and updates on first and third-party games coming to PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation VR.

So could we be about to see some big GTA news during this State Of Play? It's certainly possible. Remember that the next-gen versions of GTA V were first announced during the PlayStation 5 State Of Play last summer, so there's every chance Rockstar has worked with Sony again to share another announcement.

What's less certain is whether or not this announcement will involve the rumoured GTA III/San Andreas/Vice City remakes. At this point, this mythical collection is nothing more than a wild rumour and could well be nothing more than GTAForum users having some fun with us.

The fact that ClimaCool seemed to predict something was coming on February 25 well before Sony announced this State Of Play is intriguing, although it's far more likely that tonight's GTA news - if there is any GTA news - will be an update on the "expanded and enhanced" next-gen version of GTA V, which Rockstar plans to release this year. Stay frosty, and be sure to tune in to the State Of Play tonight at 10pm (UK time).
