Amazingly, this was completed with no experience of animating cutscenes.

Modder Fat Dino has taken it upon themselves to remake Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, specifically the introductory scene of the game, and the results are mind-blowing.

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is more than fifteen years old and it remains one of the greatest games ever developed. In fact, fans are clamouring for an official remake of the game for current generation consoles, triumphing over games like Half-Life, Tekken 3, Super Mario World and Left 4 Dead in a poll conducted last year. Yeah, its impact on the industry cannot be understated. However, seeing as Rockstar Games has got its hands full with support for Grand Theft Auto Online and Grand Theft Auto 6, gamers from all over the world have been beavering away at their own remakes and remasters of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. Oh, that reminds me, there's also going to be a PlayStation 5 version of Grand Theft Auto 5, and those accompanying technical enhancements and performance upgrades are looking very swishy in its announcement trailer below. Check it out.

Fat Dino explained that they didn't want to undertake a remake of the entire game, saying that this would be "impossible." Instead, they turned their attention to the iconic introductory scene of San Andreas, and got to work. Yes, this is in Unreal Engine 4, and it's been created through Core. Core is a type of software creation program (exclusive to Epic Games) that offers high quality art and sound assets for free with no knowledge of coding required to produce a huge variety of games. So, all Fat Dino needed to do was buy assets from the Unreal Marketplace to begin building the city and the airport seen at the start of San Andreas. Even in its rudimentary state, it already looks impressive, as the modder runs through the progression of the remake.

With CJ, they needed to make the model from scratch, as no one has uploaded the character to the Marketplace. This wasn't the last challenge Fat Dino would face, as they had no experience in animation, and needed to learn how to use a control rig to reproduce the scenes as accurately as possible. They did take some creative liberties with the arrest scene, but this only gives us the opportunity to appreciate the city. All in all, it looks amazing as a passion project and they plead that Rockstar Games allows the "dream [to] come true" with a real remake of San Andreas.
