In today's "Wholesome News" report, this grandfather and grandson picked up their new Xbox Series X consoles together, and it's the former's first ever console.

It's never too late to get into a hobby, and the pandemic has led to a lot of people trying totally new things owing to restrictions on physical movement and socialisation. Some have started cross-stitching, some have set their sights on jam-making, and a fair few have given gaming a whirl for the very first time.

Gaming has an advantage in that online play connects you with your friends and countless other people around the world, strengthening friendships and striking up new alliances. Moreover, lockdowns have rules about leaving the house and for what purpose. Though you're inside, you'll be wandering wondrous planets in No Man's Sky, a post-apocalyptic Seattle in The Last of Us Part 2, or the snowy streets of Jorvik in Assassin's Creed Valhalla, for example.

The Xbox Series X has launched worldwide, with the Pacific regions getting ahead of the game (quite literally) owing to the time differences around the world. Reddit user AppleWasMyIdea uploaded a photo of themselves and their grandfather standing proudly with their new consoles, copying the same pose in an adorable comparison. "57 years between us. My Pa's very first console," they said, and the post has received very sweet responses.

Plenty of people are congratulating the two on snagging the Xbox Series Xs, and are excited for AppleWasMyIdea's Pa. According to his grandson, he's enthusiastic about driving simulators and flight simulators (as you might have guessed). So, he simply had to have an Xbox Series X for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020, which is forwards compatible with the next-generation gizmo. Also, it's likely that the game will get a free upgrade to its new version when it launches in 2021, so their grandad has even more to look forward to in the future.

This isn't the only story of families coming together over a newfound love for video games. A few weeks ago, Reddit user ApeWatcher shared a brilliant photo of their father, sitting comfortably in his armchair and staring intently at the telly. "He plays Red dead 2 story mode for hours every day," says ApeWatcher. "He finished the story 30+ times at this point." Other older gamers chimed in, seeing themselves reflected in the story, and stated how much they love the rootin', tootin', and shooting simulator, too.

I'm sure we'll hear even more surprising stories when both the PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X are out in the wild. Heck, I might even ask my Nana if she'd like to give Watch Dogs Legion a go, as a Londoner through and through.
