'GTA V' Won't Get Any Major Upgrades On Next-Gen Consoles, Report Claims

Despite releasing back in 2013, GTA V refuses to go away. The PlayStation 2 might have had three GTA games - GTA III, Vice City, and San Andreas - but the latest instalment of the franchise has had three PlayStations. After releasing on PlayStation 3 nearly a decade ago, GTA V was subsequently ported to PlayStation 4. Just a few months ago, Rockstar confirmed that it would also be coming to PlayStation 5 in 2021.

Not an awful lot is known about this next-gen port yet, apart from the fact that it will be "expanded and enhanced", which includes "a range of technical improvements, visual upgrades and performance enhancements to take full advantage of the console's powerful new hardware, making the game more beautiful and more responsive than ever".

There's been some confusion as to what this means for the current-gen version of GTA V. Many assumed that it would possible to claim a free next-gen upgrade in the way that other titles - including The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Cyberpunk 2077, and Assassin's Creed Valhalla - have already offered.

While this would make sense for a seven-year-old game, Windows Central Senior Editor Jez Corden is now suggesting on Twitter that our current-gen versions of GTA V will not benefit from any kind of next-gen upgrades, implying that we'll have to pay for the game again to see any real improvements on PS5 and Xbox Series X.

Corden also suggested that while GTA V will run on next-gen hardware via backwards compatibility, it will remain locked at 30fps - a stark contrast to games like God Of War, which will be upgraded to support 60fps and cross-gen saves. He did at least add that playing our current-gen copies on next-gen consoles would see faster loading times, although that's true of every game.

For now, we'll just have to wait and see how substantial Rockstar's next-gen port of GTA V is - and how much the developer intends to charge for it. Certainly, we'd hope that some fairly major improvements have been made to justify selling the 2013 title for the third time. Watch this space.
