It looks as if Valve has lent its approval and support to a team of modders currently working to remaster Half-Life 2.
Fans of the seminal 2004 first-person shooter will probably already be familiar with Half-Life 2: Remastered Collection, an unofficial project from the same group that developed Half-Life 2: Update. The remaster has been in development for a number of years now, but the fact it has won Valve's consent is a big win. Too many fan remakes start off strong and are then hit with takedown requests from lawyers.

As spotted on SteamDB (via PCGN), Half-Life 2: Remastered Collection is from Filip Victor and is "not Valve related". With that said, Valve insider Tyler McVicker notes that the company has given it its blessing and will allow development to continue unimpeded by legal nonsense. We love to see this kind of thing, we really do.

We don't yet know exactly what the Remastered Collection will entail, but we do know that it's being billed as the next version of Half-Life 2: Update. That's reason enough for fans to get very excited indeed. For those who might not be aware, Half-Life 2: Update is a massive mod that includes completely overhauled visual effects and bug fixes.
Completely free to anyone with a PC and a copy of Half-Life 2, the update boasts things like "complete lighting overhaul including enhanced lighting, more detailed world shadows, and full High Dynamic Range Lighting (HDR), and new particle effects and improved fog, and an extensive Community Commentary Mode featuring the voices of well-known Youtubers".

Given how properly impressive Half-Life 2: Update already is, I can't wait to find out exactly how much further Remastered Collection goes when it finally launches. Hopefully we'll learn much more about this one soon.
