Harry Potter Open World RPG Story And Gameplay Details Appear To Leak Online

The leaky cauldron.

With E3 season finally upon us, many believe that the long-rumoured Harry Potter RPG is set to be unveiled soon. Ahead of this, a source which claims to be involved in marketing at Warner Bros. has leaked a ton of alleged details about the title, including story details and character customisation options.

I would advise you take this report with a pinch of salt - or magic salt, or whatever they use in the world of Harry Potter. The source's claims are completely unverified, but given the fact that the game is still a complete enigma we figured it was interesting to consider these particular rumours.

As detailed on Reddit, the game's title is supposedly Hogwarts: A Dark Legacy, is set some years after the books, and doesn't feature any kind of Harry Potter branding other than the name of the school. Honestly, I find this a little suspicious for two reasons: A Dark Legacy is a crap name, and there's no way Warner Bros. would try to sell a Harry Potter game without Harry Potter somewhere in the title. But let's move on.

According to the leak, players take on the role of a Hogwarts student, which lines up with the scarce details we've heard about the game so far. You'll play as a fifth-year who transferred from a different magical school, meaning that your wizard will already be fairly capable and you won't have to mess about learning naff spells before you can do the cool stuff.

There's also talk of a basic character customisation system, and the ability to choose between pureblood, half-blood, or muggle-born. This, apparently, will have gameplay ramifications. Presumably the way in which certain characters react to you, as the primary villains of the books were the ones who believed that anyone not from a pureblood family was worthless.

As you'd expect from a game set in Hogwarts, you'll get sorted into one of the four Houses early on. This will apparently be based on a few crucial early-game decisions you make, and whichever House you end up in will matter. However, it also sounds like the game will always lead you down the path of the hero in the end, so don't expect the chance to play as a complete scumbag.

The leak also claims that A Dark Legacy lets you fully explore Hogwarts and its surrounding area, as well as the village of Hogsmeade and the Ministry Of Magic. It sounds like there'll even be a Nemesis system not unlike the one found in Shadow Of Mordor, where players will get their very own rival to battle. The battle system, by the way, is said to be more slow and methodical than button mashy.

A few smaller details were also revealed, although I find a lot of these hard to believe. The first is that the game is supposed to be "dark" and for kids who grew up with Harry Potter, as if that's what we want from a magical series set at a fantasy school just because we're a bit older now. It's also claimed that there are romance options which can result in marriage, which sounds a bit fishy if the game is set at a school.

In my experience, the more things a leak tries to pass off, the more likely it is to have been made up. I'm not suggesting there aren't some kernels of truth hiding in there, but as someone who's been a fan of Potter from the day the books magically came into being, I'd bet everything that the game isn't called A Dark Legacy. It just doesn't sound very Harry Potter.

We'll find out for sure what the Harry Potter RPG has to offer in due course. Just a few months ago, a report surfaced that claimed WB had been planning to show it off at E3. If the company has elected to host its own digital event or piggyback off of another publisher, we should be hearing something in the next few weeks.
