Disney have announced that Hayden Christensen will return as Darth Vader in the upcoming Obi-Wan Disney+ series, and it might be one of the greatest surprises of 2020. Indeed, a surprise to be sure, but a welcome one.

For the uninitiated, Disney's Obi-Wan Kebobi series is still yet to begin filming. Production is set to kick-off in March 2021 and yes, Ewan McGregor will return as the enigmatic titular Jedi Master. While we know that the show will take place 10 years after the events of Revenge Of The Sith, that's about it for concrete information.

Of course, there's plenty of canon Star Wars lore kicking around in that interim period, not least the fantastic Star Wars: Rogue One and not altogether awful Solo, and there's no doubt we can expect some familiar faces to make some appearances. And that's where Hayden Christensen comes in.

The announcement comes from the official Star Wars Twitter account and reveals Christensen, who fans will remember played Anakin Skywalker in Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith, will return as Darth Vader in the series.

It's interesting to note that when Anakin makes his full transition to Darth Vader (visually I mean, with the iconic black suit) the voice of Vader for the few spoken lines was provided by James Earl Jones, who many will know as the imposing baritone voice behind the Sith Lord in the original Star Wars trilogy. So who will voice him this time around? Christensen or Jones?

The Obi-Wan Kenobi series is being directed by Deborah Chow (The Mandalorian, Better Call Saul, Mr. Robot) who described it in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, as having a simple premise; "Just being a Jedi, it's not safe."

Ewan McGregor will return to his role as Obi-Wan, and in the same interview, said that "the most beautiful thing of all [about this series] is that it's brought me back together with Hayden" and that they will have "another swing at each other" before the final credits roll. All very exciting stuff.

Assuming the Obi-Wan series is going to be as big a hit as I'm dreaming it will be, could there be scope to remake (or let's face it, rebot) the 2001 game Star Wars: Obi-Wan? A next-gen game starring McGregor defying all manner of evil perils in a bid to survive and protect a young Luke Skywalker would be an amazing concept, in my opinion. We've also been getting our hopes up over a Mandalorian game, ever since we first started thinking about the idea. Our hopes were bolsters by the fact that God Of War's Cory Barlog seems to agree with the concept.

Sadly, there's still no firm release date for Obi-Wan Kenobi, but it's a safe bet we won't be seeing it on our screens until late 2021 at the very earliest, with 2022 being a much more likely window. What we do know is that it will be exclusive to Disney+, where there's plenty of other Star Wars content to keep you going until that time.
