‘No Man’s Sky’, this sure isn’t

Way back in December 2018, Hello Games revealed The Last Campfire, the game to come after the British studio's hugely ambitious No Man's Sky. Or rather, alongside it, I guess, as NMS continues to receive updates (the latest adding biological ships to all the spacefaring adventuring).

And now, we know a little more about this shorter game, which is being made by a team with previous experience of the wonderful Wii game, LostWinds. The Last Campfire has a proper trailer, which you can watch below. It reveals that the game is coming to PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch - and that it's releasing this summer.

Says Hello Games of The Last Campfire:

"The Last Campfire team is a very small group of friends, who all worked together before (on a bunch of projects, including the lovely LostWinds if you remember that*). The project came about through our desire to have an outlet in the studio which harked back to a time before No Man's Sky - back when Hello Games was four people in a room working on Joe Danger, incubating a new idea and watching it and the team grow and develop. We're excited about The Last Campfire, but also what this team does in future."

(*We do, we do remember that. It was great!)

The aim of The Last Campfire is to deliver an experience that is in line with an animated movie - expect a short run time (certainly compared to NMS!), and lots of emotional punch. From the trailer, there's definitely some healthy melancholy at play, which will likely appeal to anyone who has a place in their heart for games like Journey and Monument Valley.

The protagonist of The Last Campfire is Ember, who's trying to find their way home from a strange place full of puzzles - and what appears to be a lot of dead, or frozen, NPCs. Anyone else getting White Witch of Narnia vibes? She who turned her enemies to stone? Not just me, then. It's clear that fire is a useful tool for solving some of the game's puzzles, too.

We're expecting to see more of The Last Campfire between now and its release (and hopefully we'll get to play it in advance, too). Meantime, you can get more information on the game at its official website.
