The 2000 cult-classic Hogs Of War is finally making its long-awaited return... though not in the way you might have expected. After 20 years, the Infogrames-developed turn-based WWII strategy game is being revived through Kickstarter as a tabletop title called Hogs Of War The Miniatures Game.

Hogs Of War The Miniatures Game is described by creator Stone Sword Games as a "one to four-player cooperative miniature wargame," They add that it's "Warhammer-lite with X-Wing vibes". I'm not entirely sure what that means, but I'm here for it.

If you're concerned that this is simply a bunch of chancers ripping off the Hogs Of War IP, there's no need to worry. The Nottingham-based Stone Sword Games previously put out a Hogs Of War-inspired card game with the blessing of those involved with the original title, and this latest endeavour looks to be a continuation in the same vein.

Stone Sword Games is made up of people who grew up loving the uniquely British humour of the original Hogs Of War, and that's something the team clearly works to replicate in its own take on the IP. It might not be the Hogs Of War II that we're all so dearly hoping for, but any opportunity to run around a make-believe battlefield as a pig decked out in WWII finery is an opportunity I'm happy to take.

At the time of writing, Hogs Of War The Miniatures Game has 401 followers on Kickstarter, and the actual crowdfunding campaign doesn't kick off until September 22nd. Between this and the fact that the card game was clearly a tremendous success, I'd wager Stone Sword Games has another hit on its hands.

Earlier this year, we actually spoke to one of the development on the original Hogs Of War and his experience with creating one of the most fondly remembered British-made PlayStation titles of the early 00's. Infogrames lead programmer Andrew Fox told us about working with the late, great Rik Mayall, what happened to the plans for the official sequel, and even the possibility of that remaster we all so desperately crave.

"Oh boy, if someone funded [a remaster], I'd love to see it on the Switch," Andrew said. "What a beautiful match up that would be! But will the game have stood the test of time, or would it simply be a short-lived nostalgia trip for us lucky few? We may never know."
