2021 got that little bit darker last night when Warner Bros. and Avalanche Software announced that their upcoming open-world Harry Potter title Hogwarts Legacy was delayed until 2022.

In a post shared on social media, the developer announced that it needed more time to refine the gameplay experience. "We would like to thank fans from around the world on the tremendous reaction to the announcement of Hogwarts Legacy from our Portkey Games label," Avalanche explained. "Creating the best possible experience for all of the Wizarding World and gaming fans is paramount to us so we are giving the game the time it needs."

Set hundreds of years before the events of Harry Potter, Hogwarts Legacy is already an ambitious-sounding RPG with a dangerous amount of hype surrounding it. "Expect Hogwarts Legacy to be filled with all kinds of immersive magic, while your student-character will learn spells, brew potions, tame fantastic beasts, select companions to help them fight off deadly enemies," Avalanche Software said when the game was announced last summer.

Given that this already sounds like the kind of Harry Potter RPG that fans have been clamouring for for years now, expectations are high. That's why the fans seem more than happy with the decision to delay the game, as they're more than happy to wait as long as it takes for Hogwarts Legacy to be ready. A number of fans took to social media to share messages of encouragement, with many specifically referencing Cyberpunk 2077's troubled launch as reason enough to be patient.

Here's hoping we learn a little more about Hogwarts Legacy at some point this so as to keep us tided over until 2022. But the most important thing, of course, is that the development team take their time to realise their vision, and do so without completely burning themselves out.
