'Hogwarts Legacy' Open World Is Absolutely Massive, Includes Tons Of Classic Locations

Last night Warner Bros. and Portkey Games announced Hogwarts Legacy, the long-rumoured Harry Potter RPG that we've all been waiting for. Releasing in 2021,

Beyond a surprise trailer that gave us our first real look at the open-world adventure in action along with a brief synopsis for the game, we didn't have that much to go on. However Portkey Games and The Wizarding World Team have now dropped a few more key details on the upcoming title, including exactly how much of the world of Harry Potter players will get to explore.

"The game, which invites you to 'Live the Unwritten', is set in the 1800s, where players will live the life of a student at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry," reads a post on the official Wizarding World website. "Expect Hogwarts Legacy to be filled with all kinds of immersive magic, while your student-character will learn spells, brew potions, tame fantastic beasts, select companions to help them fight off deadly enemies."

In addition to letting players explore the entirety of Hogwarts and its surrounding grounds, we'll also be able to head to classic locations like the Forbidden Forest and Hogsmede Village. It's unclear whether these areas will all form part of one seamless map or if we'll have to load in between areas, but I'd imagine it'll be the former. I'm already giddy at the prospect of zooming around the mountains surrounding the school on the back of a broomstick.

The Wizarding World Team also touch on some of the RPG aspects baked into the game. Players will attend Hogwarts and learn new spells and skills, growing into a fully-fledged witch or wizard, which isn't surprising - but it runs deeper than that. From the sounds of it we'll be faced with various choices along the course of the story that have a genuine impact on the world around us. Colour me intrigued.

The blog post continues: "While you dig deep into the wizarding world's forgotten past - your character will discover an unusual ability that only they possess. Indeed, Hogwarts Legacy will challenge players in all sorts of unexpected ways - including scenarios that will pose difficult choices and determine what they stand for."

While the rest of the post is a little vague as to what those choices will be, I think it's safe to assume that we'll have to work out whether to pursue the path of light or darkness as we grow and learn more about the world. Then again, maybe it won't quite be as clear cut as all that?

Hogwarts Legacy will be coming to PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series consoles, and PC next year. Be sure to stick with us for all the details on this one as we get them.
