'Hogwarts Legacy' Won't Feature Multiplayer Raids, Single-Player Only

It's fair to say that people are incredibly excited for the upcoming Harry Potter RPG Hogwarts Legacy. Releasing in 2021 on current and next-gen platforms, players will get to explore the likes of Hogwarts, Hogsmede, and The Forbidden Forest as they attend classes, learn spells, and ultimately make choices that will shape the world around them.

While we wait for a first real look at gameplay (which is rumoured to be coming in December), reports on what the game might feature have been flying all over the place. Most of what we know for sure is fairly limited right now since we've only had the one trailer and official announcement... but somewhere along the way the idea that the game would feature multiplayer raids seemed to show up in the minds of fans.

I'm not entirely sure where or how this particular rumour originated, but it doesn't look like it's true. As cool as it would be to team up with your mates in Hogwarts Legacy and blast through some dungeons together, official word makes it pretty clear that the game is an entirely single-player experience.

According to the Hogwarts Legacy FAQ over on the website, the game is "an open-world, single-player, action role-playing videogame (RPG) set in the 1800s wizarding world. The story has players experiencing life as a student at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry like never before, as they live the unwritten and embark on a dangerous journey to uncover a hidden truth of the wizarding world."

Notice the use of "single-player" there, which kind of puts down the multiplayer rumours - at least for now. Of course there's nothing to suggest that developer Portkey Games won't add some form of multiplayer to the game after launch. I could see multiplayer raids being added as some kind of cool endgame content for all the witches and wizards out there who've completely finished everything else the game has to offer.

There's also the chance the FAQ is dancing around the truth right now to preserve a multiplayer reveal later on, but basically, don't get your hopes up too much for multiplayer right now. Personally, I'm happy for the team to focus on single-player for now, especially since creating a massive open-world RPG is already hard enough without chucking multiplayer into the mix. Anything we might happen to get post-launch would be a lively surprise though, naturally.
