A sequel to DC Comics fighting game Injustice 2 could be announced soon, if a recent tease is anything to go by. Comic book writer Tom Taylor has been hinting that the Injustice series of books could be about to return - which has naturally led to speculation that an Injustice 3 video game is on the way.

Developed by Mortal Kombat studio NetherRealm, the Injustice series centres around an alternative universe starring DC superheroes. In this world, Superman and Batman have been at each other throats for years. Superman kind of lost his mind and became a tyrannical dictator, and Batman obviously had a bit of a problem with that. It was a whole thing.

and its sequel dealt with the immediate conflicts that arose between the characters in this world. It is a fighting game after all, so the story mode really just has to get down to it.

However, Taylor has been predominately responsible for an excellent series of comic books that tie-in to the video games. These runs essentially fill in the gaps leading up to each game, adding further context to why certain characters are where they are, or why they're on the side they're on. Again, they're really good, and I can't recommend them enough.

Now that Taylor is all over Twitter teasing something Injustice related, the general consensus is that he's working on a prequel to Injustice 3. The last two Injustice runs followed the same pattern, establishing the events leading up to the story of the game ahead of the game's launch. It seems logical that his third series would herald a third game, then.

As exciting as this would be, there is a chance that DC Comics has simply decided to release Injustice books independently of the games. They've proven incredibly popular as alternate universe stories in which anything can (and does) happen, so it wouldn't be the most surprising thing for the publisher to announce a new ongoing series with the Injustice name.

According to recent reports, a new Suicide Squad game and the long-rumoured Batman game are set to be revealed during the DC Fandome event in August. If Injustice 3 is coming, I'd put good money on there being a reveal at this same event.
