Concept 4 Art

Turtle Rock Studios, who you may know as the developers behind the wildly successful original Left 4 Dead game, have released a stunning piece of concept art for their new game, and apparent spiritual successor to L4D, Back 4 Blood.

Revealed on Twitter (via IGN) the concept art strikes more than a passing resemblance to the studios' other popular zombie game, if only in theme. Check out the image for yourself below.

The art seemingly depicts a run-down human settlement surrounded by home-made defenses like tire traps, wooden barricades and spikes. Adorning the entrance to the settlement, in giant painted letters, is the word 'hope'.

Back 4 Blood was first announced over a year ago with Turtle Rock describing it as a "next-gen cooperative FPS" where players would be able to "shoot up a lot of zombies". Stop us if you've heard this one before.

So what separates Back 4 Blood from its ancestors you might ask? Well, "a whole lot of new stuff [that] makes it unique" is the only official line so far. What does that mean? We have no idea.

If we're going to be taking assumptions from the single piece of concept art we have (and, of course we are) it looks like it might be more in the vein of a tower defense game, perhaps with a focus on surviving waves of zombies by fortifying your cobbled-together abode, using the downtime to upgrade and lay traps for the undead hordes. Kind of like The Last Stand, but not a flash game and with next-gen graphics and mechanics.

As for now, we have absolutely no concrete ideas on what to expect of Back 4 Blood or when. Upon the game's announcement in 2019, (and we're presuming is still the case) we learned that the game is scheduled for release on PC, Xbox One and PS4, although unless it's coming really soon, you'd be forgiven for assuming the upcoming PS5 and Xbox Series X consoles would be added to that list, too.
