It's an exciting time to be a Star Wars fan. Not only are there new games coming from EA and Ubisoft, as well as a brand-new Knights Of The Old Republic from a mystery studio, but LEGO Star Wars is back, baby.

LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga is the first LEGO Star Wars game in years, and promises to completely reinvent the entire LEGO game formula in a number of fascinating ways. Given that the original 2005 LEGO Star Wars was the beginning of what basically became an entirely new genre, it's fitting that the Star Wars IP would once again merge with LEGO for the first chapter in a new era of brick-based action games.

As the name suggests, LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga will offer a retelling of all nine main Star Wars films, from The Phantom Menace to The Rise Of Skywalker. The new game won't simply remaster levels from the original LEGO Star Wars and its sequel though. This is a completely new game with overhauled combat, multiple open world planets to explore, brand-new levels, and other exciting features.

We already know the game is expected to launch this year, but developer TT Games has remained fairly tight-lipped on many of the project's details so far. Fortunately a new interview in this month's Official PlayStation Magazine lifts the lid on a wealth of new reasons to get excited for The Skywalker Saga.

According to Dawn McDiarmid, lead hub designer at TT Games, The Skywalker Saga will feature roughly 800 unique characters. Of those, an incredible 300 will be playable. These characters will of course be taken from the prequels, original films, and sequels, so there should be a little something for everyone, whether you're a Darth Maul stan or a Kylo Ren fanboy.

Even more exciting is the game's open world galaxy. McDiarmid told OPM that there are 23 planets and moons to explore with no less than 28 unique locations that players can visit in total. McDiarmid teased that "if you have a favorite Star Wars location, it's pretty likely you can visit it in-game".

But what about if you have a favourite movie you want to skip ahead to as soon as you start the game? Well, you can. McDiarmid confirmed that you can play each film's campaign in any order you'd like, giving the players complete freedom of choice to enjoy the franchise the way they want to.

LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga is expected to hit current and next-gen consoles later this year.
