The long-dormant Mafia franchise could finally be making a return. The official Twitter account of the crime sim franchise sprang to life over the weekend for the first time in nearly two years, tweeting just one word: "Family."
Now, I don't know about you, but I've been around for a while now. When a Twitter account for a franchise that's been on ice for ages suddenly tweets something again? It's not because they miss their followers and want to check in, it's because they've something up their sleeves. That something tends to be an announcement.
Some have pointed out that the tweet could simply have been in reference to the US Mother's Day which was celebrated over the weekend... but the general consensus seems to be that there's a little more to it than that.
What could we be getting then? A remaster? A brand-new game in the series? The last game in the series, Mafia 3, was released back in 2016. It was not well-received. While the open world an story certainly had promise, it was let down by all manner of truly atrocious bugs that made the whole experience a real letdown.
I can't imagine anyone is exactly screaming for a sequel, then. A remaster of Mafia or Mafia 2, on the other hand? That's a little more likely. In fact, back in September last year, publisher 2K Games' parent company Take-Two Interactive reapplied for the trademarks for the first two games. A remastered collection is certainly a possibility, then.
The first Mafia released way back in 2002 for PC, Xbox, and PlayStation 2, and would obviously hugely benefit from a fresh lick of paint at this point. It was hugely well-received by critics at the time, and while the 18-year-old game could do with a few upgrades and quality-of-life improvements, it'd be nice to see it on modern consoles.
Mafia 2, released in 2010, wasn't quite as much of a hit. With that said, it's a perfectly solid game that I'm sure fans would be happy to play again. I'm just not entirely sure I'd count myself among those fans.
E3 season is fast approaching, and even though the show itself can't go ahead, developers and publishers are still gearing up to announce all sorts of exciting things. I reckon if Mafia really is coming back, we'll be finding out for sure in the next few weeks. Watch this space. Not this space, but just this general website... yeah?
